Chemical Toll Blending

Toll blending or contract blending / chemical toll manufacturing as it is sometimes referred to is a manufacturing service often offered within the chemical manufacturing industry.

Toll blending refers to the production of chemical products requested by a third party who often do not have the equipment, resources, or technical know-how to complete in-house.

It is common for companies to use toll blending services. These companies range from brand owners, retailers and distributors.

The common approach to toll blending is that a third party will contact the chemical toll manufacturing company and both parties will sign an NDA (non-disclosure agreement). The third party will then provide information on the product they would like the toll blender to produce. This information is usually an outline of:

  • What the product is
  • How it should perform
  • Details of the actual formulation
  • Method of manufacture
  • Information on the proposed packaging

Why Use a Toll Blender?

There are multiple reasons why a third party requests the services of a toll blending company. The main reasons we see are:

  • No investment for specialist equipment
  • No in-house technical resource
  • To save costs
  • To increase production capacity
  • Utilise blending and production expertise
  • Harness toll blenders regulatory and technical support
  • Make use of toll blenders accreditations

Cost Savings on Raw Materials, Technical Resource and Specialist Equipment

There are many chemicals used in formulations that require specialist equipment and processes to remain stable within a finished, blended product. This specialised equipment usually requires a large capital investment and demands high level technical ability to be installed / implemented. Many companies prefer to outsource their production to a company who is already equipped to handle their product’s needs. This saves money and reduces required in-house resource.

At Techtron, our chemical blending facility produces many different products simultaneously, often containing some of the same raw materials. Third parties can benefit from lower costs when using our liquid blending service as we have the purchasing power to order raw materials in bulk, as they are used in multiple formulations. These discounts can then be passed onto our customers.

As we produce multiple products that span across many sectors daily, we have a wide range of specialist equipment that is already being utilised at our manufacturing site. This includes equipment such as, shrink wrap tunnels, inline labellers, cappers and heat sealers. This equipment can be used for our customers’ formulations as a part of our toll blending service.

Increased Production Capacity

We work to ensure that our blending room and packing hall are running as efficiently as possible. Efficient production is at the heart of our toll blending service. Our packing lines allow for a flexible approach. Many of our filling lines can fill multiple pack sizes and designs allowing us to free up capacity as and when required. This means we can fulfil customer’s demands, without having to invest in specialised filling equipment.

Accreditations

Another advantage of using a toll blending service is that you can reduce your regulations compliancy requirements. In many cases a toll blender will hold a number of accreditations that they are already compliant with. Here at Techtron we are accredited to ISO9001:2015 and BRC consumer products. We also comply with current regulations surrounding safe labelling, transport and hazard regulations.
